EPA CE classes are a must-have. You should always know when your employees need classes and which classes they need. Even though this seems like something that they should be taking care of, the life of your business depends on having properly licensed employees. Are you really going to trust your business to them? Besides, when you keep three simple pieces of information on hand, you don’t have to worry about a long process involved in figuring out who needs what and when. These things you should know include:

1.) The date of certification expiration or renewal. In order to keep people on schedule, you have to know how long they have to complete a course or multiple courses before their certification expires. In the event of renewal, you might need to know when they need to take the course in question again so that they can remain certified.

2.) Which EPA continuing education classes they’ve already taken. In many instances, they cannot take the same class twice. This means that you will need to take the time to check out what they’ve already done so that they don’t waste time and money taking classes that don’t matter. In some instances, the same class will be used for recertification, but by knowing state standards and EPA requirements, you will easily be able to differentiate between the two.

3.) What classes they need to take. This goes hand in hand with the information above. You should have a list of mandated EPA continuing education courses and mark them off once they’ve been completed. That way, you know where they stand and what’s coming next so that you can find the classes that they need. In some instances, you might not be able to find what they need in your area, but the internet can provide you with online training solutions instead.

When you’re dealing with EPA regulations and certification, you need to make sure that everyone is up to date. Letting a certification go bad is big trouble, and you can’t really trust employees to take care of their own CE. You have to take care of your business, and when you can do it with three simple pieces of information, it’s not that difficult to do. Also, if you do use online courses, you should check into programs that offer you a learning management system, as well. This way, you can ensure that you’re tracking everyone’s progress accordingly, and it will be visually easier to understand.

You can’t just get the certificate and be done with it, though. This is one of many career fields where continuing education is a must. You are going to have to check with the EPA and your state to see what requirements you have for re-certifying yourself periodically throughout your career. Every law is different, so make sure that you know what is expected of you.

It is your responsibility to take care of your EPA certification and continuing education. However, there are some instances where employers will pay for the courses or set them up for you. This is not always the case, so you should never assume that this will happen in your situation. Whenever you go in for a job interview, you need to ask whose responsibility it is to pay for and schedule your CE courses. In August of this year, the EPA settled a lawsuit filed by the Sierra Club with the agreement to set standards for farm and urban runoff pollutants. These standards will be numeric in value, allowing for a clear and precise knowledge of exactly how much fertilizer and animal waste is polluting waterways and how much it needs to be reduced. This is the first time in history that the EPA has put limits on what they refer to as ‘nutrient runoff’ within a particular state. Many states have their own standards set forth, while many have very limited ideas about pollution through waste and fertilizer products.

Having numeric limits makes a much clearer statement about what will and won’t be tolerated when it comes to runoff from farms and urban sources. Instead of just telling people that they need to lower the amount of waste runoff, they can now give them an exact number value to aim for, creating less pollution throughout Florida’s waterways. Even though this was a one-of-a-kind event, it was a landmark case for environmentalists, and it’s only a matter of time before the EPA sets out to regulate the waste limits in other states around the country.

Numbers make everything easier for everyone. They can better look out for major polluting sources and help farmers to regulate and control their own agricultural runoff, which will serve to protect the environment and the farmers who live and work the lands that they love. Fertilizer in and of itself is not the enemy. Rather, it is the harmful nitrogen and phosphorus from this product and other wastes that environmentalists are concerned about. The EPA has until January 14, 2010 to come up with a proposal, which must be finalized by October of next year. During this time, they have made it clear that they will work with scientists from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to come up with water quality standards that are possible and scientifically defensible.

Many environmentalists blame the runoff for a variety of situations that occur in Florida waterways. However, without study and proof, it is hard to say much more than that these elements are harming the waters to an extent that is greater than it should be. Florida is leading by example, and it’s likely only going to be a matter of time before other states follow suit and become EPA regulated for runoff pollution.

The EPA regulates many different types of toxins and dangerous emissions and substances on a daily basis. Until recently, they have promoted the Nevada program that is designed to reduce mercury emissions in the air that come from gold mines, but they all agreed that federal standards or regulations weren’t necessary. Unfortunately, a lawsuit from the Sierra Club changed all that, and now the EPA has until the end of October to determine exactly what those regulations will be. Considering that the majority of the largest and most productive gold mines in the country are located in Nevada, many people fear for their own safety and wellbeing with the emissions from these mines, which is what prompted the issue in the first place.

Mercury is a natural heavy metal, and can be toxic to the brain and body tissue in large quantities. It is produced from the processing of the ore at gold mines, which allows it to get into the air and streams in and around gold mines, and then travel to other places if it is not contained. The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection started the mandatory mercury control program back in 2006, but by that time they already had a voluntary program in place for 5 years to reduce air emissions from gold mining.

In 2001, the NDEP recorded 21,098 pounds of mercury emissions. By 2007 through the help of the voluntary program that was implemented, that number was down to 4,893 pounds. They tried to intervene in the lawsuit so that duplicate regulations wouldn’t be made and create confusion, but that was rejected. Now, it’s up to the EPA to determine what they will regulate for mercury emissions on a federal level. They have one month to determine the regulations for gold mines and meet the terms of the Sierra Club lawsuit, and until July of 2010 to regulate mercury emissions for other industries throughout the country.

There are many careers that require continuing education and ongoing training throughout the life of the career. It doesn’t matter what type of career you choose, because if there is a license or certification involved, that generally means more training as you go along. Most people will wait until it gets closer to their deadline to seek out the continuing education credits that they need, but this isn’t something that you should do. You need to get your EPA or environmental CE as soon as possible so that you have one less thing to worry about later on down the line.

There are so many different ways to take care of your environmental CE courses. You can choose to take traditional classes or attend training seminars, or you can learn online depending on what you need and where you live. Some states don’t authorize online training for continuing education yet, so you will need to check with your state licensing board to see what is acceptable. However, you should do this as soon as you get your license so that you know how much training you need.

For example, if you have a license or certification that is good for two years, and you need 24 hours of continuing education to renew, you should plan it out so that you can take 2 hours a month until the renewal date or even take 4 hours every other month for the two years. If you want to get it out of the way for good, try taking 4-8 hours every month for the first 4-12 months and then you don’t have to worry about it ever again until your renewal date. Too many people save their environmental CE courses until they are practically on top of their deadline, which can make things hectic and complicated. Plus, if you have a problem, you run the risk of lapsing your certification because you might not get it resolved in time.

Don’t waste time sitting around and thinking about continuing education for your EPA career or environmental position. Get out there and get the credits that you need now, and get on with your life. That way, you can enjoy more freedom and less stress when you know that you have everything taken care of. If you really want to be efficient, take online courses when you can, because they will be much quicker and easier than typical EPA training courses.
All this regulation can get confusing, and is leaving many big mines wondering how they’re going to work under state and federal regulations that very well may be conflicting. Considering that the state has been doing such a good job of regulating things, some feel that the federal regulations aren’t really necessary. Is it really necessary to federally regulate something that is already well maintained on a state level? While the EPA is there to protect the environment, are they wasting their efforts in this matter? Or will federal regulations make the world a healthier place? Only time will tell.
