Alcohol & Food Safety
When you work as a restaurant owner or manager, it is your job to keep tabs on your employees to make sure that they are doing everything that they are supposed to be doing. This includes getting the required server CE credits that they need to keep their certification in a variety of areas. Whether it is food safety or responsible beverage service, there are certain things that servers need to know. Sometimes, the state mandates courses to be taken, and in other instances it is the employer’s requirement to have these courses. Either way, there are three things that you need to know about your staff to ensure that they are staying on track.
1. What courses have they taken so far. Some people don’t realize that once a course is taken it cannot be taken again, unless it is something like the alcohol beverage certification course, which must be re-taken every time the certification expires. Make sure that you know what your employees have already taken and what they haven’t.
2. What they are able to or required to take. What are the state offerings, the required courses by your company, or mandated state courses for your employees? When do they need to take them, and how long is the certification valid? There are certain times for certain courses, so keep that in mind, as well.
3. When their certification expires. Knowing when your employees are set to lose their certification can help you to get them back into the classroom so that they can renew that certification as needed. You could try to trust them to track this, but for your business’s sake, it’s best if you take care of it yourself.
Keeping these tidbits on hand can be very helpful for any owner or manager in food service. Whether it is food safety certification, responsible alcohol retailing, or even customer service or ethics training, there are courses that can make employees better at what they do. Whether they are required or not, they can add more depth and education to any career. If you choose, you can set up online courses for your servers and monitor their progress right there, rather than spending a fortune on traditional classes or on-site training seminars. Keep this information in mind, and make sure that you do whatever it takes to create the best employees for your business, regardless of whether or not the state requires any certification or training for the servers that you hire.
