Server jobs are in a rare place right now. Some companies are still hiring but the jobs that are available are very limited compared to what they might have been even just a few years ago. When you take the initiative to find a new job in these tough times, you need to be careful and make sure that you are doing whatever it takes to get the job done right the first time. There are so many different places that you can look for jobs, but the ‘how’ is much more important than the ‘where’.
You need to try to be positive and focus on marketing yourself as THE person for the job. If you believe that you are the best, a company will see that and they will believe it, too. You should demonstrate your abilities well and make sure that you have proof of your previous success within this particular field. When it comes to foodservice careers, you should also make sure that you take the time to demonstrate your skills and education in safety and hygiene training so that the employer knows that you are proficient in working with food.
One of the best ways to do this and prove your skills at the same time is to ensure that your CE credits are up to date and that your licensing or certification is not close to renewal. When companies see an employee with the need for training within the first six months of their career, they see that as a hassle. The only training you should need when you start a new job is whatever the employer requires that you don’t already have certification for. You don’t have to worry about spending a lot of money, either, because you can easily get the server training that you need online for a much lower price than traditional classes.
Trying to find a new job is a scary endeavor. However, you have to be courageous and show them that you are capable of doing the job. Right now, you are a salesperson and your product is yourself. You need to sell yourself to the companies that you want to work with so that they cannot refuse you because of how good you are at what you do. When there are more people unemployed and fewer jobs available, you have to fight twice as hard for every opportunity that you get.
