Cosmetology
Nashville’s Salon Professional Academy is doing something that they’ve never done before—offering $5,000 scholarships to any General Motors employees who want to start a new career. Due to the re-structuring of the operations, General Motors is laying off a lot of employees who have no other experience or ability in the job market which leaves them with nowhere to turn. Fortunately, the cosmetology school is ready and willing to help, only requiring scholarship applicants to have one year of full-time employment with General Motors in order to apply.
Salon Professional Academy is giving out an unlimited number of scholarships, according to the Tennessean, for students who enrolled in September, as well as those who enroll in November and January for their cosmetology course. Applicants can come from any area of the General Motors team, including management and United Auto Workers members. The co-owner of the Academy noted that this is the first time that they have offered this much financial assistance to a large group, but that it is a worthy cause. With classes limited to 15 students, the Salon Professional Academy is willing to fill as many classes as they need to in order to meet the need for Spring Hill GM workers that want to pursue cosmetology careers.
With all of the job loss and business shutdowns going on in the economy, it’s a refreshing change to see people doing something good and helpful to get people back on their feet. All of the compensation and post-employment benefits packages in the world couldn’t offer the same level of satisfaction that these GM workers will get from having an opportunity to start their careers over and do something that they love. Cosmetology certainly isn’t for everyone, but it is one of the few careers that are steadily growing at a time when everything else seems to be at a standstill. As such, being able to give people the training to put them in jobs that are needed is a priceless opportunity.
It’s not all about beauty and good looks with this program. It’s about helping out where people need it most, and that’s exactly what Salon Professional Academy is doing. With so many people hard up for work and unable to find employment after a job loss like this, the scholarships from the school are a priceless gift for many who might have had nowhere else to turn after their loss of employment. When people do the right thing, you can’t help but notice.
