Real Estate Spotlight- California offers Electronic License Exams

First it was driver’s licenses for most states, if not all of them. Now, California is among the first to implement an electronic license exam system for real estate agents. There are many advantages to this system, including the ability to grant licenses on the spot and help people get out and get working much faster. The electronic system will also allow for lower administrative costs, more security, better testing practices, and much more. The Department of Real Estate (DRE) is excited for this new program and certain that it will provide exactly what the trainees need and what the state desires.

Security will be increased because test materials cannot be stolen, exams can be scrambled at any time to change them and keep people from taking answers from someone else, and the computer system will allow for capturing of identity immediately and correctly. The testing practices themselves will be improved because there will be less monitoring, more effective oversight, and scrambled testing so that no two people get the same test. The costs will be lowered because books and materials won’t need to be printed, shipped, or stored, and there won’t be as much need for people handling these materials in the first place.

First, applicants began to apply for the real estate exam and the license together in 2005. That process required a two-week waiting period to receive the license once the exam was passed. Today, people can apply for a license exam and license at once, pass the exam, and walk out with a license the very same day. Technology is doing many wonderful things for the world, and this is just a glimpse of how much easier it is making professional certification.

Right now, the system has only been implemented in Oakland and is headed to Fresno in the coming months. Eventually, the program will be in place in all five offices throughout the state of California, but it will take some time to roll out the statewide effort to improve real estate licensing. The entire process was less than six weeks for the first person to receive a license with the new system. That included sign up, testing, and license issuance, which is quite a cut from the previous testing methods. Before he even left the testing center, his information was already online stating that he was a licensed agent within the state of California. That’s what you call instant gratification.
