It is discouraging to see the state of the real estate market and know that there is nothing you can do but sit and wait out the storm. However, there are things that you can do to keep your business going even when the market is slow. It all comes down to the proper real estate training and experience to be able to keep going despite everything being against you. Many people might think that being a real estate appraiser is one of the worst jobs to have right now because no one is selling or refinancing, which can make the market scarce. However, if you’re an appraiser, here are three tips to help your business no matter what the market looks like.

1. Build your reputation. If you have a good reputation, you will always have clients. You will likely have people that come to deal with you and only you, and who will never work with another company. They will pass along your information to their friends, family members, and other people that they know so that you can keep business going. One appraisal in the current market is a victory.

2. Celebrate those little victories. Remind yourself that all hope is NOT lost because you did have a client. Even if you have half as many clients as you used to, that’s still business. Focus on the positives and use the down time to improve areas of your business that need it. This would not be a bad time to get real estate continuing education. Be an optimist and your attitude will pay off.

3. Don’t sell yourself short. Too many people think the market isn’t moving so they’re just out of luck. Go out there and find business. If you have to, go make business happen. Work with real estate agencies that are still selling homes and helping people buy homes. They will be able to put in a good word for you if you put in a good word for them, which can create a great working relationship now, and an even better one once the market bounces back.

Real estate appraisal is a rough industry to be in right now, however, as long as you live in an area where homes are still selling, people will still need appraisals. It is your job to go after that business and make it yours. There are very few people that are willing to fight in the current market, so your efforts will almost always be rewarded.
