Where Did the Slogan “Go Green” Originate?

Go Green” is one of the most popular catchphrases uttered in today’s society. With everyone in a struggle to go green and save the environment, it gets you wondering where the slogan actually came from. In the 1970s, with the development of Earth Day and the other various movements put into place by “tree huggers” and “hippies”, the green movement was first initiated. At this time, it was small and largely unnoticed on a global scale. As time progressed, however, the world became more interested in saving their planet. The actual phrase itself is not very well documented or researched as to its first use, but it can be speculated.

Some sources link the origin of “go green” to the Go Green Initiative started in 2002, in California, by Jill Buck. This program is an Environmental Training and Stewardship Program that has now been adopted in all 50 states and 13 different countries. However, this initiative is largely focused on schools, and the possibility of the use of the “go green” slogan before this began is still likely. It really doesn’t matter who started the phrase, though, as long as someone’s going to do something to save the planet.

To “go green” is to strive for sustainability and protection of the environment. It consists of doing things to protect and conserve the Earth, rather than taking away from it like people have for so many years. In light of the worries of global warming and environmental deterioration, more and more people are striving to live a green life and give back, even in the smallest way, to the planet that we live on. Without documented information or a patent on the actual phrase “go green”, we might never learn of its origins. However, whoever is responsible for coining the phrase probably wishes they would have done so. They’d be a billionaire by now with its popularity.

Going green is not just something that you do on occasion. Many people are taking small steps to go green, but the true green-friendly lives are the ones that do everything possible to protect and sustain the environment so that we can enjoy what little we have left. Whether the phrase came from that 2002 project or from an earlier date and time that is not published, as long as people are taking time to give back the world is going to be a better place.
