Food Safety, OSHA and Safety
You’d think that the likely flash point in the food business is food safety, but in the case of DeMoulas Supermarkets Inc. and its Market Basket store in Rindge on U.S. Route 202, it’s wilful violation of several work safety standards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has cited DeMoulas for recurring fall and laceration hazards and also for its incorrect response to a worker’s serious injury. OSHA has proposed a whopping total fine of $589,200 for the grocery chain.
OSHA reported that employees were exposed to falls from heights over 11 feet while working on top of makeshift platforms such as freezers, produce coolers, and storage lofts that had inadequate guardrails. It also discovered that workers were exposed to laceration hazards from knives because the grocery chain failed to conduct a hazard assessment and to provide hand protection.
Previously, OSHA had cited the grocery chain for the same infractions, making the second instances grounds for steeper fines.
The inspection of the Market Basket store was triggered after an employee suffered head trauma and broken bones when he fell to a concrete floor from a storage mezzanine with inadequate guardrails. The injured worker wasn’t brought to hospital for emergency healthcare, but was conveyed instead by management to the store’s receiving dock to await a kin to bring him to a medical facility.
