Demand for Pharmacy Technician Increases

The economic downturn is having a surprising positive effect on a handful of sectors of the job market. One such is the pharmacy technician sector which, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will see jobs increase substantially by 31 percent nationally through the next seven years.

The reason? Pharmacy technician jobs, heretofore a magnet for younger workers, are suddenly drawing older workers who are not ready to retire and are seeking stable and meaningful second careers—in the process, boosting interest in pharmacy technician education and, as it’s turning out, attendance at pharmacy technician classes.

In addition, the DoL noted that the job market for pharmacy technician actually favors those with formal pharmacy technician training or certification—exactly what top online training schools such as Meditec.com have been providing to aspiring pharmacy technicians for some time now.

The demographic shift was noted by Florida College of Pharmacy program development coordinator Judy Riffee after she began teaching pharmacy technicians at the college’s Gainesville campus in 2008.  “The education and work experience of my current class ranges from librarians and engineers to health care and finance professionals. The common thread seems to be a downturned economy that is greatly affecting job retention and taking many people out of the workplace for which they were originally trained,” Riffee observed.
