The best of times, the worst of times, handling hazardous substances has always been dangerous. Now with climate change and more environmental unpredictability thrown in the mix, the already-risky job has become even more perilous.

Hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, and other natural disasters are major threats to repositories of nuclear and chemical materials. The tsunami that devastated Fukushima, Japan in March 2011, for instance, compromised facilities that were thought to be stable and safe, but now are causing varying degrees of food, water, and air contamination.

These new, pressing realities make it clear that understanding and implementing checks and procedures regarding hazardous substances are not only urgent but also mandatory.
