It was not long ago that students were forced to travel, attend classes wherever they were offered, and make time and effort to get the education that they so desperately wanted. In recent years, it has become increasingly easy for students to travel less, learn more, and even get complete degrees online. Within the cosmetology industry, online education is an option that is growing in popularity, but not nearly as sought out as other programs. Cosmetology is a very hands-on type of career, which is why in-person training and education is much more desirable than even the most convenient online classes.
Online cosmetology programs are not new, and not all of them are hands-off. There are requirements for practical applications that must be met, allowing students to do some work online, but then attend a classroom setting to get their practice hours in. Even with all of the growth in online education, state testing and licensure for many trades and licensed careers has remained something that is done in person. There are various reasons that state laws don’t let people take online exams for career licenses, among them being the ability to cheat on the test or have others take it for them.
Georgia is one of the first states to offer online licensing applications, which is very convenient for many students seeking their master cosmetology license. Once the students pass the required exam, the application for licensure can be submitted online via a secure server to the Secretary of State. This option was sought by the Secretary of State herself, who oversees the Professional Licensing Board Division. Karen Handel openly encouraged all of the licensing boards in the state to consider ways to become more cost-effective and efficient through the use of technology, and the Cosmetology Board listened.
Under the new regulations, applicants can apply for their license online after they have passed the exam, and current license holders are able to renew their licenses online, rather than having to go through the hassle of going out and getting it renewed. Although many states are leery of this online licensing option, it is one that will continue to progress as time goes on. It is more cost-effective for the state, more efficient for everyone involved and much more convenient for license holders and new applicants who used to spend hours filling out paperwork and getting their professional licenses. With all of the technology available today, it’s only a matter of time before everything becomes a little more convenient. For applicants in Georgia, that time is now.
